Prime Conditions for Spring Chinook in Discovery Passage

Sunday, May 24th brought near-perfect conditions to Campbell River and the Discovery Passage. Light NW winds at 4 km/h, calm seas, and a morning slack transitioning into flood tide created ideal hunting grounds for Spring Chinook. Water temps are climbing, and the fish are responding—they're filling out nicely and staging hard through the Passage and into Johnstone Strait.

What's Running This Week

Spring Chinook (15–25 lbs) remain our primary target, and catch & release action is exceptional right now. Remember: Chinook is catch & release only until July 15 per DFO regulation, but that doesn't diminish the thrill of hooking into these powerful fish. We're also excited to report that Lingcod season opened May 1st and is producing solid numbers. Double-header days—mixing Chinook and Lingcod—are absolutely possible this week.

Technique & Tactics

Spring Chinook are aggressive feeders as they move through Discovery Passage toward their spawning grounds. Live bait and jigging around structure near Campbell River and along the Johnstone Strait edges are producing consistent takes. Work the flood tide, stay patient during slack water, and keep your gear tight—these fish fight hard. Lingcod, meanwhile, are holding on rocky bottom; jigging and bottom-bouncing are your go-to methods.
